Braille is taught at both Tampa and Winter Haven in the Independent Living Skills Training program.

Our Tampa address is 1106 West Platt St. We are located in Old Hyde Park, 2 blocks South of Kennedy, 2 blocks East of the Crosstown Expressway.

Our Winter Haven address is 206 Avenue D NW. We are located in downtown Winter Haven, one block east of 3rd Street, near City Hall and directly across Avenue D from EMS.

Individuals with uncorrectable visual impairments that significantly affect daily activities or employment.

No, you can self-refer. An online application for services must be completed through the Division of Blind Services, who will then refer to the Lighthouse for the Blind & Low Vision. An eye and medical report will be required upon enrollment.

This is a 7-week course that teaches daily living skills including Braille, money identification, phone dialing, cooking, cleaning, and assistive technology training. This class is provided to those residing in Hillsborough, Hardee or Polk Counties.

Computer and other assistive technology training runs 6-8 weeks during daytime hours. Job placement and development services are ongoing based on individual needs and goals. This class is provided to those residing in Hillsborough, Hardee or Polk Counties.

Transportation is provided for those enrolled in Independent Living Skills Training, Pre-ETS (Transition for Teens) and the Children’s Program. Program eligible clients must reside in Hillsborough, Hardee or Polk Counties.

All direct services are provided at no charge to eligible individuals. We are funded through the Division of Blind Services, United Way, and other community sources.

No to both questions. Guide dogs are trained at highly specialized dog guide training schools across the United States. The closest such school to our location is Southeast Guide Dogs, located in Palmetto, FL., phone 941-729-5665.
